Hotel and contract beds: how to specify beds for hospitality
Short answer: A contract bed specification for a hotel or hospitality project sets out the bed type, size, mattress, fire rating and quantity for each room type. Most UK hotels specify mattresses to BS 7177 Medium Hazard (which includes the Crib 5 test), but your fire risk assessment decides. Send Flair Trade your room schedule for a written quote with trade prices ex VAT, quantities and delivery dates.
Key facts
- Crib 5 and Source 5 fire-retardant options are available for contract use (BS 7177), on request as a quote option.
- Written quotes show trade prices ex VAT, quantities per room type and delivery dates.
- Delivery to site, or free collection from Liversedge, West Yorkshire.
- A named account manager handles your schedule, quote and deliveries.
What makes a bed a "contract" bed
"Contract" means furniture supplied for non-domestic use: hotels, B&Bs, serviced apartments, holiday parks, student halls and care homes. The main differences from a domestic purchase are volume, durability, consistency across rooms and fire performance. Contract buyers usually need the same bed in many rooms, delivered to a programme, with documents for their fire risk assessment.
Choosing bed types for guest rooms
- Divan beds and headboards: a traditional hotel choice that is easy to move and clean around. See divan beds and headboards.
- Ottoman and storage beds: useful in apartments and smaller rooms where luggage or linen needs storing. See ottoman and storage beds.
- TV and hotel-style beds: see TV and hotel beds.
- Upholstered beds: for boutique rooms. See upholstered and fabric beds.
- Sofa beds and guest beds: for family rooms and apartments. See day, guest and sofa beds.
Choosing mattresses for high-turnover rooms
Open coil mattresses are a common choice for high-turnover rooms; pocket sprung and memory foam or hybrid mattresses suit higher-spec rooms. See our mattress types guide for trade buyers and the open coil and contract mattresses category. Add protectors, pillows and bedding to finish each room.
Fire safety for hotel beds
BS 7177 sets ignition resistance for mattresses, divans and bed bases in four hazard categories. Hotels, hostels and halls of residence are listed as typical Medium Hazard premises (cigarette, match-equivalent and Crib 5 tests), while some hotels and hostels can be High Hazard. The standard says the fire risk assessment for the premises decides the category, so agree it with your Responsible Person or insurer. Full detail: BS 7177 and Crib 5 explained.
Flair Trade offers Crib 5 and Source 5 fire-retardant options for contract use on request as a quote option, with certificates supplied with trade orders. Tell us your premises type and specification when you ask for a quote.
